Steering fault

Hi, I've had the sign 'steering fault' and STOP on my dash for the last week.

I had the AA come and check the battery and fuses etc and everything was fine. He suggested that the power steering motor had failed.

I haven't purchased a replacement as I'm not sure what I need. I am confused as to exactly where the motor is... Is it on the steering column (seems a fairly straightforward fix with cheap replacements on eBay ) or is it on the steering rack, which a local garage quotes me 280+vat for the part alone! They said the pump was on the rack???

Any help in clarifying exactly what I need would be much appreciated!

Any local (chorley, Lancashire) megane owners who have any advice on where to go would be great!

Thanks for your help!!!
