Question Corroded rear support beam.

Hi Everyone. I'm a new member to the forum and was wondering if any of you could advise me on a problem I have with my 2003 Scenic Fidji. On the last two MOTs I have been advised that " a rear support beam is corroded". My mechanic has told me that there is nothing to worry about but I have now noticed the beam has all but rusted through. It is a 50x12mm rectangular section that spans tranversely just in front of the rear wheel arches from sill to to sill. It seems to be of no significant structural importance except for providing a fixing for some plastic brackets of some sort at either end. The mid section, which has corroded doesn't support anything. Can you please advise as to whether I should be concerned and if and how this member should be replaced? Thanks very much in anticipation.
