You can check the auto adjuster by switching lights on before starting engine, when engine has started the light adjuster will move up and down like a self check.
Be careful adjusting lights manually because if your adjuster kicks in your lights may be too high. Xenon headlights only use about 35W but can have a light output equivilent to a 200W halogen bulb.
