When fitting the wheel I place the guide into a hole in the wheel - let it poke through about 100mm - offer the end up to a hole in the hub and let the wheel slide down the guide pin until the wheel locates onto the centre spigot - the wheel will remoan suspended on the guide pin - screw a bolt in with your free hand. Idealy you need about 4" to 6" of guide opin to protrude through the hole in the wheel.

Personally I would be reluctant to use the stud conversion as it would entail a modification to the car resulting in possible insurance implications.

It would be possible to make your own threaded guide pin - get a long bolt with the same thread - cut the head off - hacksaw a slot in the end to suit a screwdriver and Robert's your mammies brother.
