I would not make your own studs unless you have access to hi tensile studs/threaded rods.

But I gotta admit that it was much easier in the old days when wheel hubs had studs and you just bunged the wheel onto them.
Now as you say, you are trying to lift an awkward, heavy lump, balance it on the centre lip and line up the holes..then keep it there while you get the first couple of pins in.

A piece or two of all thread... or long bolts with the heads cut off could be loose threaded in to locate the wheel, then removed once a couple of wheel bolts are in.

The other thing I have seen used on heavy lorry tyres is a lift lever.. Wheel goes on one end, foot on the other...push down, wheel goes up and only real effort for arms/hands is to guide it.
Could do the same with a plank and a house brick
