Why did car makers switch from studs/nuts to bolts? Was it a safety move ie less rough protusions to cause injury, or was it simply for cleaner styling without those lovely shiny hubcaps?
Cheaper to drill and tap the hub and supply loose bolts then drill tap (or just weld) studs in.
