Must be an Italian thing - my Alfa has a stud as well to locate the wheels.
Just a thought though - do you have the correct wheels for the car? Generally speaking, I've never had issue with steel wheels, and the only time I had issues with alloy wheels was because the wheels were aftermarket and didn't have the spigot rings to locate the alloy properly on the hub - this resulted in having to juggle between trying to hold the wheel in place and finding the bolt hole and lots of swear words. And you're right, its not fun!
With the correct wheels, the wheel would normally just sit on the hub and you should be able to turn it slowly on the hub to find the bolt hole pretty easily (helps to have the car in gear or handbrake up depending on which wheel you're working on).
