finally sussed it, the knurled bit that was on the spindle was the inner part of the arm, I carefully removed this by splitting it with a junior hacksaw then took the whole spindle assembly apart by removing the retaining circlip (cheers mark) after using wire wool to clean the spindle it was greased and re-assembled the knurled bit was re-positioned and glued back inside the arm with aroldite before being placed back on the spindle ( its tapered so will only fit one way). It works perfectly saving me at least £100
