Please be patient, I'm trying to get a handle on this. I've had five big 4x4's, Nissan Patrol and Land Cruiser (Middle east), land rover ( Africa , a right bag of bolts that spent more time in the shop!!) and a jeep Wrangler ( USA and the UK)
Now I'm retired old fart ( can I say that!??) I no longer need the massive grunt of these monsters.
The RX4 has long intrigued me. The concept of a small MPV, with limited 4x4, is clever. However,( there's always a however) I've heard some nightmare stories about gearboxes, drive shafts, prop shafts etc.
Here's my plan:-
Now days I do mostly Tarmac ( 75%) with some very very gentle gravel and grass lanes( 25% not heavy green lane stuff). I'd like to buy a petrol RX4 as late as model as possible.( I really like the burgundy colour!) Can a good RX4 cope with gentle realistic grass/ gravel work. What can it really wade to?
Can the propshaft really be repaired using BMW bits? How tough is the viscous unit. And last but not least!!! All my muscle 4x4's were shod with BFG AT ko's. BFG don't do a tyre small enough for the RX4, but they do a 215/70/16 radial.... Too big?? If so what's the best all rounder please?
Well that's me lot !!!! Thanks for your patients and understanding. I think the RX4 is a great package, good looks and with a bit of TLC could really fit the bill.
