One other thing ...
New brake pads fit quite tightly into the fixed part of the caliper; but not so tight that they can't be moved by hand. Having cleaned up the caliper where the pads fit I was surprised at how tight they seemed in spite of a bright shiny surface.
On closer inspection the bright shiny surface turned out to be very hard and shiny compacted rust. It took careful use of a round file and scraping really hard with a Stanley knife to remove the rust. Finally the pads fitted snug but were able to be moved on the shiny METAL surfaces. Cleaning back to the metal is a surprisingly hard job to do well, but it will avoid stuck brake pads and bad braking.
