I have a 05 Megane cc and when the roof is down I seem to get a slight judder unless I'm driving on smooth roads. Could anyone please let me know what this could be, thanks
If it's a shaking through the car if it hits a bump then it's what's called 'scuttle shake'.I would guess that when the roofs up it gives the body enough extra strength to prevent it happening too much, but once the roof is down the body is free to flex a little more and you can feel it.
If it is scuttle shake then there's nothing you can do to prevent it,most convertibles/cabrios do it to a greater or lesser extent. If anyone has ever driven a Saab 9-3 or Rover 200 cabrio then they will know exactly what I mean.:d
It's actually comparably bad in the Meg CC which is what has put me off buying one, I'd say that this is certainly the judder you're experiencing. Unfortunately it can't be helped.
Thanks very much for your quick responses, I wondered if it could have been something like this but was unsure....I'll just have to take some sea sickness tablets when its sunny lol
reading through Lag's post I must stand up and defend the Rover, I had one for 6 years, after previously owning Escort, Astra and Golf cabrio's. The Rover suffered far less from scuttle shake than any of the others, the Golf was by far the worst, you almost had to anticipate bumps in the road and steer into them at anything above 30mph.
I never had a Saab, that was supposed to be my next step, but the threat of redundancy loomed and so I cut back and bought a Mondeo instead. Been a boring tin lidder ever since. I've never driven a Megane CC, but travelled in our marketing managers once and it did seem a bit springy with the roof down. I have driven a Pug 206cc and that was dreadful, almost like a gokart, you could literally feel your seat banking from side to side as the floor moved.
Soft top convertibles are strengthened along the floor and sills to reduce scuttle shake but then putting the roof up makes little difference of course. Perhaps with the stiffening effect of tin folders when they are up, less is done to stiffen the chassis?
It's not so much the feeling of the shaking body that put me off the Meg CC, it's the way the windscreen and rear view mirror shake when they're not supported by the roof, and pretty violently too when the car also has the 17" alloy wheels. A shame because they're such a sexy looking car
did you ever find a solution or are you just happily bouncing around the cabin while the rear view mirror practically shakes itself off? ( well that's what is happening to me anyway ).
I recently got myself a Megane CC 04 which seems perfect appart from the topdown london road milkshake mode.
Would a change in the suspension or wheel balance help ?
