Clio front brake caliper bolts

I recently tried to change the brake pads and discs on my wife's clio... ordered the parts and carried on for a relatively simple job... However all came to a big stop when I found the caliper 'top plate' retainer bolts had a weird form... Not Torx, not standard hexagonal heads but they have an internal five sided (pentagonal) drive??? I have never seen a five sided drive bolt in over 25 yrs working on cars! I tried everywhere for them and nobody seems to know about them. Imagine an Allen Key slot about the 9mm size but not with 6 sides but only 5!

Does anyone know what the tool for these is called and better still - where I can buy one from?

many thanks

E.

You don't need to remove the top pentagonal allen bolt. Just remove bottom bolt and swing the caliper out.

I just found out that there's another two bolts that I could undo to perhaps get access to the pads rather than these pentagonal ones; so maybe all is well after all... will have a go tomorrow...

Yes, you can also undo the two larger bolts that hold the caliper to the hub. Easier just removing the lower bolt and swing caliper out. Alternatively, buy a special pentagonal bit for Girling brakes.

The bolts have five sided heads for a reason,i.e they don't need to be undone unless someone is repairing/reconditioning the caliper it's self.

I'm sure you'll find that the pads are held in place by a slide which in turn is held in with a horse-shoe or R-clip.You take the clip out,tap the slide out and then remove the pads.Take particular notice to the shape of the pads and which side they come from,it's very easy to fit them incorrectly and then have problems refitting the slide. There should also be some anti-rattle springs on the pads which are often missing or fitted incorrectly. You need to push the pad against the spring to be able to refit the slide,it can be fiddly if you haven't done them before but hopefully all will become clear once you get into the job.
