Threaded locking wheel nut!

Hi,

have any of you guys got any tips on how a non mechanic can get one of these things off?

Had noticed that the NS rear wheel had a nail in it and went to change the spare so I could get it fixed. Only trouble is that the locking wheel nut has become badly threaded & the key won't grip the nut.

Anyone able to give me anytips on how I can get it off! Only tools I have are normal spanners, pliers, monkey wrench & a big hammer!

Cheers

I had the same problem once, after the dealer overtightened a locking wheel bolt when replacing the brake pads. I couldn't get it off with the roadside tools, and the AA man couldn't either (he re-inflated the tyre and then followed me home in case it went flat again.) A garage managed to get it off the following day using their impact wrench: The repeated rapid impacts seem to be what's needed.

As I recall, I argued the case with the dealer and got a free set of replacement locking bolts out of them.

I had the same problem on my 04 Laguna. I bought a locking wheel nut removal tool from H*lfords - under a tenner, but it didn't work because the outer ring of the wheel nut is free turning. RAC and Kw*kFit couldn't remove them but B*dget did and didn't charge me more then what I was already paying for the tyre.

My suggestion is to take it to B*dget. If you want to do it yourself, your going to need a small sharp cold chisel and a big hammer to lock or remove the outer ring before a locking wheel nut remover will work.

B*dget kindly removed all of my locking nuts at my request.
Cheers guys! The outer ring has long since disintigrated as well by the looks. Unfortunately, due to a dispute with B*dget over an inflated price for rear axle bush work, I haven't been back, and am sure B*dget are none to keen on seeing me too!

I'll have a bash with a couple of things I've thought of first then try someone else!

Cheers again!

I'd be very surprised indeed if the outer ring has packed its bags and left all on its own - it is so tight on the locking wheel nut that you may not spot that it is a free turning ring. I hammered on an imperial socket over the top of the circular locking nut and it bit in much better than I expected but all I achieved was loosening the outside ring to allow it to turn without any effect on the nut (or tapered head stud for the sake of avoiding confusion). My smug look disappeared as fast as it had arrived.

:d I have it sitting in front of me! It split right down one side.

I reckon this car has had some shoddy attention before I got it!

Now all I can do on my own is perhaps try & jam the locking key onto the worn nut. Had thought about trying to put some thin rubber strip inside the key and try & fit it onto the nut & see if that will grip.
