Guess a spring has cracked in the friction plate...wonder if it was affected by too much throttle or not enough throttle (not criticising your driving prowess btw .. just thinking about possible causes).
I think the japanese had a reputation from years back for the trend to fit smaller clutches in their designs to make them lighter to operate.

I think V-Matic is the Japanese way of saying Dephaser pulley, if I remember, I'll ask at Toyota next week.

From inside the cabin there is a (normal) manual clutch and 6 speed box.

My driving style as you would imagine is impeccable, just like your's In fairness though other than for one verypurposeful burn out, on a company car I've never stewed a clutch up in my life, even though I've towed caravans for tens of thousands of mile.

ps I hadn't got my teeth in, at the time, so it couldn't have been those
