The problem seems to be that reconnecting the battery damages the instrument cluster. By the sound of things, it causes permanent damage to the configuration memory inside the panel. The result is that the panel will only ever operate in its factory default mode (Km/h) no matter how many times you reprogram it to other settings.

It can't be rocket science for the designers to identify which component gets fried, and give those who are prepared to get their hands dirty a fair shot at fixing it. But that's not their game - they don't even consider the possibility of repairs at circuit board level thse days. The whole panel is considered as a single component, and if it goes faulty, you replace rather than repair.

It's frustrating for those who've had it happen. For those who haven't had the misfortune (yet) just make sure you turn on the side lights before reconnecting the battery. That's supposed to prevent the spike that kills the dash.
