Don't mock the old DAF varable belt drive - it was used by the Dutch armed forces for quite a few years before they moved to NATO approved vehicles. I remember driving one many moons ago - it was so simple - shove the gear lever forward - step on the gas - away you go and if you came to a hill it automaticly reduced it's drive ratio. To go backwards - shove the lever backwards - step on the gas............. As long as you didn't abuse it and you replaced the drive belt at the required intervals it gave little or no problems.
Similar varable systems are now used on electric bicycles.
