Hi, many thanks for taking the time to post!

The car has done 83000 miles. According to the service booklet, the car had new rear pads and discs at 61k. They do squeal quite loudly though, so they must not have put copper grease on :/

I understand what you're saying about the cables. This was my worry too. I think reconditioned cables can now be purchased, but cost about 200. Still cheaper than the handbrake!

I think what has me extra conscious too, is that one of our friends also has an 06 Grand Scenic, and their handbrake has just completely failed. I am trying to avoid this if possible, but I suppose it is going to fail at some stage!
