How necessary is a Bumper undertray?

When I bought my Clio Mk3 DCI It didn't have a bumper undertray.
So I went onto eBay and bought a new one for 31 which was an aftermarket product and quite frankly is totally useless. None of the fixings line up, it has no way of fixing wheel arch liners to it and it's so thin I think cardboard would do a better job.

So I'm very tempted to just remove it & not bother having one. I've had to really bodge it on there & i'm just not satisfied. I heard it flapping vigorously and thought it was going to come flying off when I was going down the motorway this evening coming back from London.

Would removing it have any big effect?
