There is a small chance of recurrence, IMHO you friend is spouting the "official" line for those who don't know motors. If it fails again, you will recognise the symptoms & deal with them. Deffo worth the risk, the alternative is an empty wallet & a PITA bleeding job.
Did you replace the pads BTW ? Sticking is often down to worn pads / stretched cables allowing the EPB to hit the end stops, from which in some cases, it can only be recovered manually.
