The missing wire will not affect braking performance if its the link for the pad wear sensor. But a physical check on brake pad wear would be necessary from time to time (just as motorists have had to do for years & years before).
However bearing in mind the new MOT regulations that say all dashboard warning lights must function correctly it's probably best you get this wire replaced to ensure the brake wear circuit functions properly.
