Re: RX4 - Squeaking, now Grinding noise from front wheels
If you take the wheel(s) off and have a look at the discs/pads, you should get a better idea of their condition.
If they look fine and the problem is elsewhere, then - if you can, as this would be best done with axle stands - jack up the entire front of the car and turn the wheels round by hand, listening for when the noise happens. Put the ignition key at the Accessories position so the steering lock is off, and turn the wheels/steering from side to side as you spin the tyres round. See if you can work out where the noise is coming from. Grasp each tyre at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, try and wiggle it side to side or up and down - looseness would indicate a wheel bearing problem. Repeat while gripping the tyre at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions.
If it's a CV joint, I've usually heard that described as a knock-knock-knock noise on turning (rather than grinding) but these things can be slightly subjective. Find a big empty car park and drive slowly round in circles with full left and then right lock on. Again, see if you can trace the noise. If you can persuade a mate that he needs some exercise, get him to trot along next to the front wheels and listen as you do the slow circles - noises can sound a lot different, or not be heard at all, when you're in the car as opposed to outside it.
