Espace 2.0 (1996) Headlights not working

Hi,

My Espace headlights have stopped working in dipped and full beam. The problem happened twice before but righted itself and I have a suspicion it's something to do with the stalk as all the fuses appear to be ok.

Could this be a problem with the column switch?

I see Euro Car Parts has a Valeo Column Switch (Part No.: 461745040) which looks like the correct replacement ... Valeo Column Switch

Any pointers on a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

My Blue Espace.

Before wasting your money on a replacement stalk (probably £40+ from M.Renault) take a look at the fuse board as it is not uncommon for several of the terminals to corrode and short out!
What to do:
1) Disconnect battery
2) Drop fuse box down as far as possible
3) unplug every socket wired into the fuse box (don't bother marking them as they are uniquely matched to each other)
4) Pull out fuse box
5) inspect all fuse box terminals find the corroded pins and clean up with emery or something sharp
6) Now check the corresponding socket and wiring to that socket clean up and repair as necessary

Good Luck:

Hi Dieseldyer,

You were correct, I finally got around to looking at the fuse board and one of the connectors from the loom had a pin shorting out. I cleaned up the pin and connector and put everything back together and the lights came back on.

The main concern is why? The loom is very stiff so the connector may have come unseated at some time but still maintained a connection. That would explain the intermittent problem.

Now I have to decide if I should replace the fuseboard and connector to be safe and sure.

My Blue Espace (now with lights)

P.S. After cleaning all the fuse pins and connectors the clock started working again, I may even be on time for something now!

Hi my blue espace
Glad to be of help the electrics appears to be the achilles heel on all these models but if you can get past that they will give good service ( this electric failure is potentially the most dangerous leading to driving in the dark!!! or short circuit leading to a fire in the glove box!!!) VERY RARE :) Good luck with the repairs.
