Further to my previous post, the new pump has not fixed the problem.
Yet again, I have seen water escaping from behind the engine and steam everywhere. This was a month after the new pump was fitted, and the car has done maybe 800 motorway miles in that time. Something is leaking, but not all the time, and it must be triggered by certain conditions (in this case it was heavy traffic after a 40 minute motorway drive).
The AA man this time said he suspected there was a corroded metal insert in the inlet manifold (his words). As it will be an expensive job, I'm worried that again this is not the root of the problem but I may have to just bite the bullet and hope it fixes the problem for good.
