This smells of a bad earth. First of all, check the earthing wires for the light clusters. If necessary, run additional earthing leads from the lamps to a known good earth point. The bolts for the boot striker plate are usually good for this.

If you unplug one cluster at a time, this should give you an idea of which one has the bad earth. The fault should go away when you unplug the one that has the bad earth.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like either a bad earth somewhere,or the wires running into the tailgate are chaffed and touching.

The first thing I'd do is open the tailgate and try and check the wiring loom as it goes through from the roof to the tailgate (by the hinges). It will probably be covered by a rubber gaiter, but if you carefully pull this out,you should be able to see the wires.Check that none are broken or damaged. If all looks well, then get back to us and we'll think of something else.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
