Looking into treating myself to this for Christmas.

I am also going to upgrade the factory speakers in my car (Renault Clio Mk2 Ph1 98 ). I was considering 4 x 13cm Alpine speakers. However I was curious with this being a Pioneer head unit, would it be wise or would it make any difference to go for Pioneer speakers, with them being produced by the same company and all.

Also in the specification for the head unit it has "Direct Sub Drive"

From the Pioneer website - Direct Sub Drive
Combine the MOSFET 50Wx4 power amp and EEQ Plus technology to get Direct Sub Drive, another unique Pioneer technology feature. It enables you to amplify your front speakers by 2 x 50 W and add a 70 W amplified filtered subwoofer (in 2 Ohm mode) in the rear to enjoy outstanding full power bass without an extra amplifier. It's an easy solution for lovers of booming bass

Now does anyone know what that jargon about the subwoofer means and what equipment would benefit best from it as I will be looking to upgrade to a sub in the near future.

Thanks in advance

From the sounds of things, you can bridge the rear channels to drive a sub instead of rear speakers. I'm no expert, but this doesn't sound like an ideal set-up to me.

And I can't honestly see any advantage of sticking with the same brand of speaker, other than that you might have more comeback on the manufacturer if something goes wrong (if Pioneer blame the speakers for a head unit failure, then it's their own speakers that they're blaming.) I can't honestly see you having a problem with the Alpines, but maybe one of the genuine car audiphiles can give you some better recommendations.

I had a Pioneer DEH-P3500MP in my 95 Phase 1 Laguna running with standard speakers and the performance and clarity was superb.

I would hold back on the speakers until you have bought and install the head unit, also is your Clio fitted with the standard tweeters?

Thanks for the replies.

The information you have given me has re-enforced what I thought. I had guessed that using any speaker would be fine. I was just curious to see if using like components could possibly be benefitial as the head unit would be designed to work with the same brand of speakers.

I was looking to upgrade speakers as I am currently not fully satisfied with the quality of the factory speakers.

justg - My Clio does have the standard tweeters in the dashboard. I was considering buying component parts to replace main speakers and the tweeters. However this involves removing the dashboard to get to them. The alternative is coaxials and disconnecting the tweeters as they may be overpowering.

I have also just put in a Pioneer DEH 30MP Cd player into my Lag 1 - it has by the sound of it the same 4 x 50 w mosfet amp. It was touch and go whether I upgraded speakers or head unit from the original - cos whenever i gave it any bass or volume, the speakers cracked up to be not worth listening to. The decision was made for me when the original philips unit blew - I put in the pioneer and there is no way i am touching the speakers - as justg says, the volume and clarity and powerful bass response is brilliant!
My mp3 player sounds superb through it too.

I suppose better speakers (alpine or pioneer) might sound better under ideal conditions, but with engine noise / road noise / wind noise from sunroof etc etc there aint no way it will be noticable I reckon.
