Question Advice (needed) on fitting roof mounted TV in car

I've got myself a DVD player for the car and one of these flip down roof mounted displays. Look great etc. (£260 for the lot. Unbranded off Ebay , but works a treat)

But I'm trying to figure out what my best options would be for installing the roof mounted display. I've got a 1998 Espace III

It comes with a flatish plate that you are supposed to secure to the roof first. But of course I can't just stick it on the roof and start poping screw through it. I need some options on how/where I could get away with putting it.

I see a crossmember along the roof just behind the front seats. This would be an obvious candidate. But I would rather have it fitted much further forward, so driver/passenger could see it as well (not while driving, I know).

But as far as I can tell, the cross member is the only metal bit before you get to the front screen area. At that point, you have the overhead lights etc.

Also, how do you go about removing/replacing the roof lining ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure about the roof lining, but I imagine if you pop out the courtesy lights and other fixings, and pull away the door and boot surround rubbers, the rest will probably be obvious. The lining may be glued to the roof of the car using a bead of sealant - if this won't peel away, then you might have to cut through the bead. You'll need to apply a similar adhesive when putting the lining back once you're satisfied with the installation.

As for sticking the plate to the roof, if it doesn't already come with adhesive pads, then get yourself some 'No More Nails on a roll' tape. Just make sure you get the permanent rather than the removable. The permanent is the best double-sided adhesive tape I've ever come across by a long way, and I've tried many.

Unless the law has changed, it's not illegal to have an LCD TV display in view of the driver, even while driving. Laws about not being able to see a TV from the driver's seat specifically apply to CRT displays, and until the law catches up, LCD TV's are actually exempt. Having said that, if plod spots you watching telly while driving, they'll have no trouble getting a 'driving without due care' charge to stick.

For that reason alone, I wouldn't mount the display where the driver can see it. You wouldn't necessarily need to be watching it yourself while driving for them to conclude that you were and give you a ticket.

Fair point about the 'driving without due care' charge. Just thinking what would happen if you had an accident. Hard job prooving you were watching the road...

I'm going to try to see if I can find a spot where you can't really see the screen while driving (without straining your neck). But you can see it by putting the seat all the way back.
