I purchased my Laguna ('96) a few months back and have only now noticed that the second key fob does not operate the central locking etc. I recall the chap that sold it to me saying he had changed the battery and am assuming that he never recoded it to the car.
Anyone know how I do this? Is it one of the fun one's whereby you have to turn the key left right etc...?
Hello again, once i've read this guy's explanation on the key/immo. issue and it clarifies this very well. Quote:
"Each transponder chip has a unique code which is guaranteed to never exist in another transponder. So every single transponder has a different code. To add a key to the car, you put the immobiliser into learning mode and instruct it to accept some keys as valid.
So for example, imagine your car originally had two keys with transponder codes ending 1110 and 6326 (note the real code numbers are actually very long) The cars ECU (central computer unit) is told to remember these two codes as OK to start the engine. If it see any other codes (or no code) it will not start.
Now you lose one key (1110) and go to the dealer for a new key. He will put the immobiliser into learn mode, clear out all the existing keys and instruct it to read the codes from the original key and the new key he shows it and remember them as valid. Now the immo has two codes stored, the original 6326 and the new one, lets say 8889. You see, the transponder codes themselves can not change, they are built in at the transponder factory. it's the car that is told to remember valid codes and reject invalid ones.
I was trying to say that as far as the car is concerned, when it is put into learn mode it does not care whether the keys are new or second hand. So the answer to your question is yes, a used transponder will be OK since it is the car that needs programming and not the key." End quote.
Hi Mike, I have a 98 Megane coupe. The other day the key fob stopped working. It has always been abit doggey since I got the car a couple of years ago, you have to be right up close to the car for the central locking to work. Anyway, I changed the batteries and still nothing. Any advice would be greatfully recieved.
I think you have the IR setup, check the reciever in the headlining is clean, no water damage, clean connectors and the Red window is clean on both sides.

a handy tip. to see if the remote key is sending a signal to the sensor in the car. on a mobile phone select the camera and point the remote at the camera as if to take a photo. press the remote and if it is working ok the you will see what looks like a white light flash in the lens of the remote. if no light then you have a bad connection or flat batteries. this may save some time pulling a remote apart
Hi Folks okay so If it's a card then it's RF and if it's a key with a button it's IR?
Much simpler with my wifey's VW ? but Bro in law has a 1.9 DCI that will hold the immo code for a day and then drop it????
Strange we fitted a new battery and did the reprogram same again?
Any ideas Folks?
Been readin a bundle of posts it's about time Renault wised up and helped their buyers.
Anyway I see there are RF ordinary keys too! What a Feckin nightmare Bring back the MkI Escorts I say!
i have just bought a clio facelift 1997 model its a 1.4 rt with one key but i cant get the key to operate the central locking, and most inportantly the engine, the car has lay for 1 year and the battery had gone dead so i need help
Firstly, I hope that "fixed" codes are not used to open doors, allow the car to start etc but rolling codes -i.e. each open/close operation follows a sequence and thus uses a different code. Otherwise it would be a simple excercise of snooping the rf signals to establish the codes & simply replay them to open/steal the car.
Secondly, if it is so easy to reprogram a car to take a new key, why can't a thief simply break in and reprogram the car to any Renault key he happens to have before stealing the car?
I'm sure that must be more to it - at least in the case of the cardkeys or Thatcham wouldn't give them Cat. 3 status? I know the Espace alarm is pretty useless but I though the immobiliser was decent.
I have two keyfobs, one works fine but the other just flashes red once and very faintly but does nothing, changed batteries but still no go. (checked solder points but look ok)
Ive just bought the car so dont know alot at the moment if someone can help?

Sorry M8 key cards are not reprogrammable look in the forum for the reasons why you'll haver to do what we all had to and buy a new one (£100+ inc programming) from a Ren dealer - stay away from used cards offered on Ebay
Hello all, just updating my info about programing you car to accept new keys. After talking to my dealer i found out that what i've explained in this thred about buying keys and programing the car accept them only works for cars after 2002, with the keys that have the small bettery fitted on the circuit board. Cars before 2002 have keys with the larger battery on the the other half of the key, will have to get the codes from Renault at France. So if you have a model after 2002 and buy a used key you shouldn't have a problem getting your immobiliser programmed to acept that key. I'm putting as an attachment to this reply a copy of the Renault service manual. It's in word and with no immages cause i could not upload the original pdf file due to thr forum uploading restritions, i hope this info help some one
Regards.
Mike, Any chance of the resync instructions for a Laguna II with RF Key Card. I've taken mine apart to resolder the Lock Microswitch. The LED lights up and the card works the ignition, but now neither of the buttons operate the locks (Unlock did before I started). Instructions for resyncing IR keys doesn't work so I think mine was on the cusp of RF/IR. Of course I may have just screwed it up completely by thinking I could do it myself! Cheers, Iain
Keycards are not programmable - each card is unique and the car is programmed to suit. They are known to fail either through faulty switches but on many occasions it's usually a cracked solder joint. Try the link below - send him an email outlining your problem and see if he can help. He was able to fix mine.
Hi everyone! Does anyone know how to recode a remote lock/immobiliser key for a 1997r megane scenic? its the type with 1 button and red led,cut out on end of key! Infra Red. You press it once to unlock door and release immobiliser?
I lost one key so got another from ebay and hope to recode it. Possible?
