Clio Temperature Gauge

Ive got a Renault Clio 1.4RT on a L plate and its over heated once before and blew the metal pipe that enters the front of the engine above the exhaust manifold. Any way the temp gauge on the dashboard is all over the place and has been for a while, some days its nice and normal under the quater mark and other times its up over the three quater mark, the fan dosn't kick in untill it hits the three quater mark, is this normal or is there summit wrong?
Currently in ilove 24's garage:

It's normal for the fan to kick in at the 3/4 mark. As for the guage being erratic, mine does to to go up and down a fair bit if stuck in traffic.
