Renault Laguna I - Temperature display

Hi, I have a MkI Laguna 2.0RT 1999. it has started to show the external temperature between 35-42 celsius. It has difficulty starting, replaced the battery, still no joy. Any Ideas?

The temp sensor is fitted in the passenger side door mirror and is accessed by removing the glass. You can see it poking down from the bottom of the mirror. Be very carefull as it's all too easy to break either the glass or one of the little plastic pieces that moves the knuckle that the glass is attached to. The sensor is quite cheap from Renault .... the mirror is not !
I'm not sure the starting prob is related to the above prob but then again it is a French car, so you never know

I think I have CDO. It's like OCD, but with ALL THE LETTERS IN THE RIGHT ORDER
