Clearly this is not a starter problem but a problem with your electric current supply eg. alternator.
Lack of voltage also makes the rpm needle to jump around.
You need to check your voltage - 14.4 v or so if less or also possible over voltage is in game you need to switch it - buy new or used on scrap but there are also options to change the parts that aren t good in it. If the output voltage isn t allright better buy another one. This means a problem occured on diode plate or voltage regulator (well if you can get regulator to test it try it, it s only mounted with two screws)
Alternator on 1.4 is driven by a belt so you cannot miss it.
Exchange eta - so about an hour.

it dose sound like a bad earth.
when your jump starting it your giving it more voltage and if theres a freyed or coroded earth strap ur giving the current more push to bridge the gap.

as chriss said check all conections and security of earth straps .
you aslo can but a jump lead from the earth terminal striaght onto the engine but preferibly the starter housing and try and start it .

its worth a try m8 ,it may well be the altanator but these little tests cost no £dosh just a bit of patiance.

good luck
