Laguna oil level message

I get an oil level message when I turn on the ignition of my Laguna but I don't understand it and it I don't have a handbook. The dipstick shows the oil level is fine, about half-way between the upper and lower limits. The dashboard message used to show "ooo--- oil ". Presumably "ooo" represents oil and "---" represents the available space above the oil .

However, these days it flashes "------ oil " even though the dipstick still shows the same level. Does this mean the sensor is disconnected/dead? If so how easy is it to fix?

Have you tried putting some oil in to see if the message clears.

To see if it is working properly simply top up the oil to the full mark on the dipstick.

If you topped up "the available space above the oil " your engine would blow up!

You can order a drivers handbook for about £5 from any Renault dealer.

If the dipstick shows the correct level and the display shows dashes it sounds more like a faulty oil level sensor.
Not sure how easy it is to get to though.

If the dipstick shows full, do not put any more oil in just to see if the display changes, as you will have overfilled the engine, leading to more expensive problems than a faulty sensor.

Hi there, on Renault petrol engines the oil level sensor is just below and slightly to the right of the oil filter, there is a small plug with two wires attached. It would be worth while removing the plug simply by pressing the little clips and checking the wires are okay and not broken. This happened to a friend's Lag RT when he dropped a plug socket on to the connector and we had to repair it using a choc block.
