Well, I booked my Clio in to the local main Renault dealer and asked if they could program my spare key into the ECU as it had stopped working. This key was actually the one off Ebay , which looked exactly the same as the main key. I had replaced the blade so it would open the doors and turn the ignition on - but that was all. Obviously I did not tell them the true origins of the key! They said they could code the spare key into the immobiliser and would charge 50. After an hour at the dealer they said their computer showed this key had already been coded to another car and therefore would be unable to code it to my car. They were adamant there was no override available on their computer and the only option was to purchase a new key fob. They insisted I pay the 50 anyway for the diagnostics to which I objected. They quoted a price of 171 for a new key!! Having spent too much time on this already I decided to go with the new key fob option and negotiated an all in price of 150. Yes, I know it's ridiculous but I was fed up with the whole thing. Technically I believe they could have coded the key off Ebay , but they don't under the guise of preserving their overall car key security. Oh and of course it increases their profits!!!!!

I just bought a clio mk1 rsi. Looking at the dials, when i start the car, the immobilizer light is always on. I went through the book and i think it said that when this happens, it means that the immo is deactivated. My infrared receiver doesn't work either and i do not have the unlocking code for the car's immo in case i manage to repair the infra red and something goes wrong.

Any suggestions on what to do?

As an ex renault owner may I offer some advice - get rid of the car and buy something with less hassle my Ford mondeo handbook explains in detail how to programme up to 4 keys ( for free !!!) Until Renault customers campaign to get the rip off element engineered out of their cars then I'm sorry folks but you'll have to lump it and pay their extortionate prices. As electronics progresses it will only get worse and the so called experts will make a mint.

I feel violated......!

My sons 2000 clio II key fob has been deteriorating over the past few weeks - initially failing to disable the immobiliser every time.

Then instead of the immo light remaining flashing it just stayed on - disconnection of car battery sorted this out - for a while......

Finally it failed completely no immo, no central locking. (Yes I did change the plip battery!). Dowloaded the code program at start of this thread - no use - I cannot get the flashing slow state it mentions to enter the generated code. So off to renault - as its the only key with plip we have forked out 201 for complete spare key & plip and replacement plip for existing key!!!!! When it arrives then gotto arrange tow to spend another 50 to get the new keys programmed up to ECU . I asked them how on earth I enter the code so I can drive the car in to program. This is a big secret so people cant nick yer motor if they manage to get the code. So I also have to fork out for transport of car to garage!!! Dont think i'll ever go near a renault with hard earned cash again........

Megane key

Was wondering if anyone knows how to programme a new key? Have ordered one from Renault at a cost of 86, have already got the code but they'll con me out of more cash to programme it unless my mechanic friend can work out a way of doing it first! Its a 1998 megane, and this is a second key for it as I'm now using the spare but am terrified if that gets knackered I'm stuck!! Any help or advice appreciated.
