Faulty Laguna Alternator

One week after the dreaded 72,000 mile service (including timing belt) engine cut out, tried to restart .....nothing except a metallic clunk! Tried the usual, jump start didn't work, rocking back and forth in gear to free a possible jammed starter solenoid no joy. Eventually bump started car but now the dash is lit up like a xmas tree. Took the car to the local car clinic and it seems the alternator is kaput. 460 quid for a new alternator from Renault, in the space of a week an 03 plate Laguna 1.9 dci has cost me the thick end of 1100 quid. I should have stuck with Vauxhall!!

Anyone else had any experience with short life alternators on Laguna's???

Its only a thought, but I presume the alternator failed due to wear & tear - not due to the drive belts being at the 'wrong' tension after the cambelt having been so recently replaced?

Strange that you didn't get any form of warning light/symbol as alternators (usually) lose re-charging efficiency over time and rarely just 'stop' working.

Not trying to sow seeds of doubt here, but perhaps these are questions which should be answered at the dealership.

Agree about auto electricians being used - they would probably have got a re-con unit on an exchange basis for yours.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

Vehicle is currently at a local independant for repair unfortunately I need the car back pdq. These guys have tried various motor factors none of whom can give a timescale of when they will get a replacement alternator.

Even if they get one, not one of the motor factors will guarantee a like for like fit but still want 380. I have came across a company on the WWW who will supply an alternator for 440 with a 220 refund on receipt of my faulty unit.

As time is not on my side I have no option but to buy new from Renault. Needless to say I will be getting the faulty item, hopefully get it refurbed and flog it to recoup some of my costs.
