Renault Megane does start (sometimes!)

My 1996 Renault Megane intermittently won't start.

It'll be fine for a bit and then I'll go to start the car and nothing happens with the engine. The electrics all come on, and the imobiliser is all fine (ie - car is NOT imobilised - keys are functioning fine), but nothing happens with the engine.

Normally when this happens, if the car is just left for a bit, say half-an-hour, the car will then start up ok. However, of late it has been happening more frequently and with longer wait periods before the car will start again.

I've just been to a garage to try and get it sorted, only for them to say that since the car is starting fine at the moment, they don't know what the problem is. They suspect it may be "a dry spot on the starter motor."

I'm somewhat relucant to just chuck money at the problem and hope it goes away. I wonder if anyone else here has ever come across the same or a similar problem?

Same problem with our Scenic

Sorry, hope you are not expecting a helpful answer!
We have had a very similar experiance. Going on over a year. Was very occasional, but has built up to the point where it happened twice in a week. Also the time to recovery has increased from <20mins to >1hr. VERY ANNOYING.
I've yet to narrow down the conditions that most closely associated.

I've just had it back from the garage recently & there's nothing on the stored diags and they have no clues. "Perhaps starter motor" but this sounds unlikely to me. I'd expect to hear the solenoid on the motor clicking in. I'd really like to hear from anyone who has any ideas on this one.

I'm really hope that one of the "experts" on this site will take some notice of this for us! PLEASE

It is driving the family around the bend. But apart from the problem the machines a goodun. Don't want to have to sell it because of this. But it is VERY TRYING

Angry my Megane won't start either!!!!

My Megane is 15 months old, bought as an ex-demo with 7 miles on the clock and for the last 9 months it has had an intermitent starting fault. Of the 15 months I have had it it has spent 5 weeks in the garage!
On the day I picked it up there was a petrol leak, it spent 5 days in the garage. Then the right hand indicator went on two occasions in 5 weeks - another two trips to the garage. Then I had a loss of power/petrol, another 3 days in the garage.

Last month it spent three weeks in the garage while they tested for the non start fault, which didn't happen while they had it. When it was there they managed to scratch and bump it - surprise another 4 days in the accident repair centre for a re-spray. In the meantime they still haven't discovered why it won't start!

Does anyone have any ideas - i'm at the end of my tether!!!!!!
