Key card.

I've bought a Laguna 1.9 td 2002 sports tourer priv and a love car it is. the "B" key has been lost.
I only have one "A" key card and want the "B" one too.

Looking through Ebay I note quite a few for sale including new ones.
One group tells me that they are programmable without paying the high costs of the main dealers. Others tell me that dealers won't touch them.
I'm also told that these keys can be re-programmed and sometimes with a DIY kit or formula.

Please what is the truth behind this question of lost keycards.

Something else now, I find it so strange that this up-market car does not have a cruise control !!

Your comments ?

Kindest regards Derek Miles.

Secondhand keycards can not be reprogrammed to a different car. ( Actually I think it is the car that is programmed to recognise the card), but either way secondhand cards oare no good.

New cards can only be bought from Renault on production of proof of ownership.

Privilege spec cars have cruise as standard from 2003 on.
I think it was only standard on the Initiale models to start with.

Hello and Welcome to the Forums.

The Keycard issue is as SportTourer says.

As of 4 June 2006 You will NOT be able to buy a new keycard from Renault without supplying the VIN number and proof of ownership of the vehicle..
The following vehicles are involved:
Megane II, Scenic II, Laguna II, Vel Satis, Espace IV, Clio III

The reason behind this is due to a major security issue that has been discovered outside the UK.

This is the theft of customers vehicles.. The senario is this. You take your vehicle for some work to be carried out. The Dodgy technician has a blank keycard. He programs that keycard to your vehicle. Then the either comes to your home address and steals the vehicle or sells the key and the address to a friend who then steals it..

So the procedure is that you or us a dealer has to provide customer specific details to Renault France who will authorise the card to be ordered.
The card then arrives at the dealership with your VIN number already coded to it. We then apply to Renault for the programming code and have 1 hour to program the key before the code expires.

So if anyone is considering buying a New key from Ebay for example. You will NOT be able to get it programmed fullstop as the Clip will not allow a non Vin encoded key to be programmed as explained above..

Note also that a new Vin encoded key Cannot be programmed to any other vehicle even it is has not been prgrammed to the origional one.

Many many thanks to both of you for the very complete answers given.
I will now have to buy a "Road Angel" to keep me out of trouble and as far as the key card is concerned, I suppose I'd better approach the Halifax for a re-mortgage !!!

Again many thanks and best wishes.

eBay cards should still be fine, as long as they are blank stock (i.e. they've never been paired to a car.) They'll be old stock before Renault brought out the new security measures that mean the card has to be pre-programmed for the car before it's sent to the dealer.

Renault now insist on pre-linking the card to a specific car before they ship it from the factory, but the car still needs to be programmed to recognise the card. Previously, the dealers held a stock of blank cards, and would perform both sides of the pairing.

Whichever way you go, you still have to find someone who has the Clip diagnostic computer (dealer or independent Renault specialist) and get them to pair the card to the car. All cards that you wish to keep 'live' need to be present for the programming. I think you can have up to four cards per car.

My 02 Privilege missed out on cruise control too. I think it was standard with the auto box but not the manual
