Megane speedo

Hi there got a prob with my 97 Megane the speedo is either all over the place or dead and the mileage is not clocking properly but the rev counter is fine.

I took the car to the renault garage and they changed the speed sensor but did not fix the prob they reckon i need to change the whole dash at cost of over 400 just wonderin if ne one else has had this prob and if this fixed it.

Cheers for your help in advance

A few Renaults have had this problem, see link......

I don't know whether a scrappy one would work, they sometimes revert to kilometers when the car battery is disconnected.
