Clio computer- is it posible/worthy?

In my Clio II Expression (1.2 16V made in january 20012) there is no onboard (trip) computer. Neverrtheless it seems to me, that there is a posibility for building in: there is a "button" on the top of the handle of the wipers and I have a feeling ( :-) ) that the previous owner, while fixing the mileage (actualy here it is a km) simply replaced the onboard computer with a simple km digital display (actually a coresponding processor/EPROM/chip). My questions are:

1. Is there actually a possibility for building in an onboasrd computer?

2. If the answer on the previous question is positive: is it worthy the effort and money.

3. What are your the experiencies, lucky people who have that gizmo in your car, with the onboard computer: how usefull is it, how punctual?

A lot of the parts are common across car ranges, such as stalks wiring etc. The question is wether the trip computer relies on the ECU for it's operation or wether it is a self contained unit, if the former the ECU may need reprogramming.

Just a few thoughts really as not something I have ever tried.

I don't have trip computer on my MKI clio and dont really feel the need for it, I have had them on previous cars and have never looked at them too much TBH
