Just been browsing the forums and thought I would throw my 2c to this question.
I recently installed a new radio which can control my iPod and bought the kit to connect it to the factory fitted remote stalk in my Laguna. Works a treat and is a pretty simple job.
The other option, which my girlfriend has in her car is the Harman Kardon Drive+Play. It's an iPod connector that comes with a display and remote stalk that you can place down beside, say, the handbreak and emulates the iPod's controls. The iPod itself connects via a cable that you can run into the glove box or under the centre armrest. If there is no AUX input on your radio, it can connect via FM through an ariel adapter.
Of course, this really only works for iPod. For other MP3 players, I really think the best option is to install a new radio with AUX. You can get SONYs with a HUD output and with the right cable kit you can connect it up to your existing radio display.
