Hi, thanks Noel for the info,
I can now see the fuses on top of the fuse box, undid the screw and uncliped the clips but could only waggle the fuse box, not a hope of getting it out of the recess, there is obviously a knack to getting this out and I haven't got it!!!! any tips

Hi Rob - According to my Haynes manual for the Laguna II there is only one fuse for the brake lights including the high-level brake light. The fuse number is F6 which is located in the main fuse box. Take it out and see if the other brake lights stop working. If no power is getting to the light I would suspect a break in the cable somewhere and I would suspect its likely in the rubber conduit where it comes from the body to the boot lid. The other possibility is the earthing point - but you could set up a tempory earth connection to test that theory.

P.S. According to the manual neither the second or third fuse boxes are used for any of the lighting.
