The alarm also protects the doors,boot and bonnet. As well as having ultrasonic sensors. You can arm the alarm without the sensors if you wish, but not without the door/boot/bonnet sensors.
When you lock the car do you double lock it? If you double lock it you cannot open the doors from the handles on the inside.
You should be able to set your alarm off by opening a door though - perhaps you have a fault?
Although I am not 100% sure, but I think on some earlier Laguna II/Megane models the alarm is only set if you double lock it.
So by a single press on the remote to lock the car, youmay not be enabling the alarm.
