Laguna - Windscreen Wiper Problems

Hi, I drive a 1997 Laguna RT. For the past few weeks I have noticed the wipers getting slower when washing my screen but, then they seemed to work properly when it rained.
This morning I have got in the car to go out, put the wipers on because it was raining, they started slow and then stopped. Coudn't get them to do anything, had to turn off the ignition lock up and use my boyfriends car. I presume they have a rain sensor but don't know for definate and if so I don't know how to fix the problem. Is there anyone that can advise me on how to find out or what to do to get then working again.

Did they have rain sensitive wipers on the Mk1

I'd go along with Donald and suggest that it may well be the wiper motor.
