Espace immobiliser (not another one!)

Wonderful site with lots of useful info for disarming Renault immobilisers but I just can't make it work with my Espace. It's a '96 2 litre petrol with IR key operating the immobiliser (or at least it did till yesterday) Pouring with rain and stopped at a shop 5 miles from home. The plip wouldn't lock the car and after the minute was up it wouldn't operate the immobiliser either so I couldn't start it. Long walk home in the pouring rain and found this thread. Got the code generating prog and back to the car to get the model number (j636). Home again and took the key apart but no paper inside. The printing on the cct board was VC16E3F and 270.5/M Entered the first 7 digits and got a code (1342). Back to the car and tried the throttle pedal/wiper stalk. Pressed throttle pedal and flashing immo light went out. No button on the stalk and it didn't press in at all just back and forward which operates the wipers. The lights stalk seemed to press in OK but didn't seem to do anything and entering the code didn't work. The central locking rocker switch operates the locks but holding it down either way did nothing and didn't affect the flashing immo light. If any kind person can suggest any other system to try I'd be very grateful. I've just paid my Renault dealer 135 to diagnose and fit a set of plug leads and am not keen on the thought of the bill I'd get for sorting this problem. Thanks in advance

I had a similar problem with my Scenic key, it turned out to be the ultrasonic LED in the key had become detaced from the small circuit board inside the key, a quick dab of solder sorted this, it has gone like this twice in 3 years.

The Bit you are looking for looks like a small 5mm black bulb and usually sticks out of the front of the key on two pins, this is fairly fragile and flexing when pressing the key causes a dry jont where it solders to the board, look (very closely) for micro cracks in the solder and prod the pins see if one is loose.

I could get mine to work with the key still together by pushing the LED back gently so it made a contact, which is useful to get you home.

Also check the solder joints to the switch.

hope this helps.

Has rain got in through the airel socket and got the overhead receiver wet?

Thanks for both suggestions. I read the threads on this site re the Renault immobiliser for several hours and tried just about everything suggested. The key seems to be working as I can see the beam from the IR sender when looking at it through my digital camera so that appears to be ok. I took the receiver down and checked for damp but it seemed dry enough. Stood it in front of a fan heater for a couple of hours just in case but no joy. The annoying thing is that there are such excellent posts giving details of how to disable the immo by putting in the code. I got the code generator program and found my code but there just doesn't seem to be a way of inputting it. The central locking button doesn't do what it should and there's no wiper stalk button to push on my Espace so I'm stumped.
