Intermittent Instruments

I have a 1999 V reg Laguna RXE and the instruments keep going haywire and sometimes they all go dead and other times work perfectly. Also at the same time the voice synthisiser stops talking and I cant hear any error messages.

I've checked battery connections and the alternator output is ok at 14volts. I'm not suspecting a voltage drop as all headlights etc remain bright and the rest of the car seems to run fine. I havent looked at the engine earth strap yet cos its been raining but I had a corroded strap on a recent Clio and this gave poor starting but this Laguna starts with no problems. Could it be the instrument panel itself at fault?

Instruments Sorted!

Hi, This is just a follow up to let you all know what the problem was.
The fault got worse as the voice synthesiser croaked and made a squealing sound even when the keys were removed and all instruments were then dead. At the same time the radio was permanently muted with 'speech' displayed in the radio display.

The bottom line is that the instrument panel was at fault. I was lucky enough to get exactly the right one for £30 from ebay and now everything works fine.

Also worth noting the remaining distance used to show '----' but now that's also fixed.

Hi Bernard . . .
I have the same symptoms on my T reg RXE.
If I charge the battery and replace it all is fine for a short while . . then all the dials die . . .goddamit!!!
Mind you after 150,000 miles I shouldn't complain.
Mind you there are many people with newer Laguna II's who seem to be getting the same problem after a relatively low usage . . .!!!??? (Bad design . . . ?)

Anyhow looks like a replacement/repair for me also.
A bit trickier to find an Auto one though. . . . :-(

Hi All . . .I have managed to get an instrument panel for my 2.0 RXE Auto for just £20 including postage . . .phew!!!
However, the mileage is showing circa 120,000 miles . . but I need to put it back to its original 151,000 miles.
Does anyone know how to reset this or where to get it done . . besides the Renault garage . . .££££££!!!
Many thanks . . .
