I guess the real question is 'battery or alternator'.

The first check for battery voltage when the engine is running will give some indication about the state of the alternator.

Vehicle batteries must be checked under load. Switch the headlamps on (plus anything else like rear heated screen, fan, fogs, radio, hazards etc)
Then measure the terminal voltage on the battery. Should be a steady 11.5 or more if the battery is holding its own.

Measure the voltage over about a minute. If its stays constant (within 0.5 volts) then the battery's ok.
