Keyless Entry - Range

Hi, i was just wondering what the range was like on other peoples keyless entry?
I have to practically be stood flat against the car before it will pick the key up.

Would this suggest a flat battery in the remote at all?

I only have the one remote as the other got snapped, (oops) so i done have another to test it with.

Also what makes me think this, when i get in the car and try to start it, sometimes it says card not detected and i have to put it in the card reader.
