If it's the fuel pump you should be able to hear it with the ignition on and the engine not running.The pump primes the system before you start,so it runs for a short time and then cuts out.
If the pump continues running all the time with ignition on,then it could be the regulator or pressure sensor at fault.Pumps can become noisy after time,but it's not always a sign that they are about to fail.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
