1997 Stereo with front speakers: Can I make rear speakers work?

Hi all

Well our megane is a 1997 model Mk1 with just front speakers and the default stereo which does not have the rear speaker support OR fader on the stereo.

I managed to rip out some speakers from a scrappy Megane, and fitted one speaker into ours - which already had the fittings and wiring in place for them.

Anyway, it didn't work! Speakers are almost indestructible unless you destroy the cone and they are both fine. So the only logical conclusion I can draw is that the stereo doesn't support back speakers - even though the rear fittings and wiring was supplied.

I checked with the scrappy for the stereo in the car where I got the speakers - he said he'd sell it to me but he didn't have the code so thats no good!

Anyway, is there a way to hack up the hardware for the current stereo to support rear speakers? - Is there some magic code to make the rear fader work or something?

Any ideas/tips appreciated!

you could piggyback the cables for the front and back speakers and get sound out of all of them, however this will reduce the inpedance on the system and could upset it. not common for it to upset them but just something to be aware of.
to be honest though, stereos are getting stupidly cheap these days for not bad systems, very easy to change, and double din adaptors / wiring harness's are easily available on good ole ebay .
i would just fit a new one, saves any grief, and it would certainly upgrade your current system
