Unhappy Help Tailgate woes

2002 Lag II 1.9dci Sport Tourer
Help I'm stuck. I locked the car last night and the tailgate was fine. I went to open the car just now the doors unlock but not the tailgate or the glass. There is power to the high level brake light & the wiper but no sound from the soloniods for the lock. I have taken off the interior trim & it all looks clean tidy & with no sign of any water.
Any ideas where to start looking in the morning!
I cant see a separate fuse. Ive not tripped some switch that isolates the tailgate lock have I?

I have had this problem as well you should try taking the switch out (it just unclips if i remember right) as on mine it looked fine until I had it unconnected then I could see that water had got in side.

A quick clean and it was back working with out any problems

Had this happen 3 times to me now until I found that the water drainage pipe that runs from just under the window down to the lower left outlet on the boot had be come detached and every time it rained water was flowing direct on to the top of the switch and not down the pipe.

Reconnected the pipe and have had not problems in the last 6 months (pipe is a bit hard to see if you donít know its there)

This is a common problem.

As lestat says, the problem is caused when the drain tube that connects the drain hole under the glass panel to the outlet comes away. This lets water drain straight over the switches. Water and wiggly electrickery don't go together that well.

The fix is fairly straight forward and you will only need a few tools.

First off, if you cant open the tailgate using the switch (sometimes it will work), slide into the boot and release the tailgate by pushing the white catch sideways.

Now the tailgate is open, using a flat head screwdriver, release the black plastic clips holding the carpet to the tailgate.

Once these are all removed the carpet liner can be taken off (may require bit of pulling, but dont be scared of it)

You will now have access to the switches.

These are released by pushing the clips in on the side of them.

Once released, remove the electrical connector (plastic push fit with two wires).

The switches are now ready to be cleaned and dried.

The main switch opens by releasing the clips around it edges (4 of). Do this by pushing in and levering the case forward. A small flathead screwdriver works on this)

Once it is apart, dry the body and contacts. If it has been contaminated for a long time, there will probably be abuild up of verdigris in there. This can easily be scrapped off with jewellers screwdriver or with a some wet and dry paper.

Once clean, carry out the reverse and put back together.

Before the switches are remounted, give them a good squirt with WD40, ensuring that the insides get a good coating. This will help waterproof them some in the future.

If you need to refit the drain tube, attach this. It may be tricky as the rear wiper motor is in the way. This comes off easily by undoing the three retaining bolts.

Once you have fitted the drain tube in, replace the switches and then replace the carpet liner.

If all has gone well, you should now have two fully functional switches and your tailgate will be back working.

Hope this helped
