Check the cabling and its connections - remember a sliding door doesn't have a constant contact with the bodywork like a hinged door so it will rely on its connections to get a good earth.

Good point. I'll check this out in the morning. The faces of the contacts are clean and shiny (I cleaned them up when I had everything apart the other day) but maybe I now need to remove the units from the door edges and check the connections inside the door / door frame.

I'll take the opportunity to check the continuity when the door's closed ... or try to.
