airflow meters?

I have a customer with a powerless scenic. Pull off the airflow plug and away it goes. So changed the meter for a gen reno part, and it lasted about 500 METERS! loud air stiffeling noise coming from turbo area, and no power. Pull off the plug and the noise goes and the power comes back. Any ideas? Duff new unit? Other turbo fault? How does the meter control the turbo output? Through the ecu and some kind of pressure regulator?

Yep - you got in one - the turbo is controlled via a pressure sensor and solenoid which operates the turbo gate. When you disconnect the MAF it is going into default mode.
